The New Berlin Heat organization consists of seven age levels for baseball, 2nd Grade (U8), 3rd Grade (U9), 4th Grade (U10), 5th Grade (U11), 6th Grade (U12), 7th grade (U13), and 8th Grade (U14); and three ages levels, two teams for U12's and U14's, for fastpitch softball, U10, U12 Red, U12 Black, U14 Red and U14 Black.  Any New Berlin resident meeting the age restrictions is eligible to tryout for a Heat team.

  • The Heat does allow players to tryout for a team above their age group to stay with their school class, and allows 8 year olds to tryout for U9 baseball and 9 year olds to tryout for U10 fastpitch softball team, etc.
  • The Heat will also make allowances for players to tryout for a team above their age group if it is in the best interest of both the player and the team.  If you have questions regarding this, matter, you may contact the coach directly of the team you wish your son or daughter to tryout for.  Click here to go to the Contact page.
Can my son or daughter play for NBAA and New Berlin Heat or New Berlin Heat and New Berlin Magic Teams?
The City of New Berlin restricts children from playing on both the NBAA recreational baseball or fastpitch softball team and one of the select New Berlin baseball or fastpitch softball teams such as the New Berlin Heat or New Berlin Magic.
  • Similarly, players are only allowed to play on one New Berlin select baseball or fastpitch softball team, i.e. the New Berlin Heat or the New Berlin Magic..
What type of time commitment is involved with playing for the New Berlin Heat?
Some coaches begin having one to two practices a month shortly after the finalized August tryouts for baseball and September tryouts for fastpitch softball.  These practices are for the benefit of the players and coaches to get to know each other, coaches expectations and to build and strengthen the team/coach relationships.
  • The fall practices are held until the weather cooperates.
    • These practices are not mandatory, but it is important to try to attend as many as your schedule will allow.
  • Beginning in January and running though the end of March the Heat rents a warehouse and assigns each team a week night and a weekend two hour practice time slot to prepare for the upcoming spring/summer season.
    • These practices are not mandatory, but attendance is strongly encouraged.  Missed practices can result in a player falling behind.  Coaches will use this time to develop plays and strategies and try to work on-on-one with players on hitting, pitching or catching.
  • As of April 1, baseball or fastpitch softball come before any other sport.  Only God, Family and School should come before baseball or fastpitch softball practice, scrimmages, games or tournaments.
    • Missing a practice or scrimmage, gives the coach the right to sit a player for an entire game.  Missing a game can lead to sitting the following game.  It is up to the coaches discretion.  But if a player misses practices, or games and others do not, it does not entitle that player playing time in the next game.
  • Parents are required to work two, two hour concession time slots at the New Berlin Heat Boys Baseball Tournament that takes place annually the last weekend in July.  Parents that do not want to or are not able to work their slotted time are given a concession buyout of at least $275.  The Heat Tournament is our one and only fundraising event.  This event helps us keep the per player cost low, buy funding our organizations baseball and softball efforts.
When is the game, scrimmage and tournament schedule release?
Coaches meet in January to develop their schedules with other teams in their age group within the WSYBL state league.  Tournaments are also posted at that time and coaches determine which tournaments are good fits for their schedule.  Coaches usually schedule between 15 and 20 league games and 3 to 4 weekend tournaments.  The finalized schedule is e-mailed to all the families on the team by mid-February.  These schedules are then posted to the Heat web site under the appropriate age group.
  • Some times scrimmages or tournaments are added to the schedule after the initial posting.  The coaches are responsible for keeping all families appraised of any changes to the team schedule.
How often does the team practice during the playing season?
It depends on the coach and the teams weekly game and tournament schedule.  Most coaches try to have at least one practice per week during the regular season.

How are the team rosters determined?

The New Berlin Heat Baseball and Fastpitch Softball programs are SELECT teams.  Players must try out EVERY year to be a part of a Heat team.  There are no automatic player spots from year to year.  Each tryout participant must attend the scheduled tryout and be ranked by independent judges.  NOTE:  The 2013 Season Tryout judging will be conducted by independent judges.  Current team coaches can watch the tryouts, but CAN NOT be a part of the ranking of the top 8 spots.
  • Baseball: Minimum of 12 players per team
  • 2-3 independent judges will score all the participants
  • Coaches for the teams can watch, but will not be a part of the scoring process
  • Coaches can take notes and watch participant tryouts
  • The top 8 scorers from each age group automatically make the team
  • The remaining 4 to 6 positions are determined by the remaining top scores and whether a call back or second tryout will be needed to sort out close scoring candidates.
  • Parents/participants are contacted via phone by the within a few days after tryouts of their standings within the top 8 scores and whether they have made the team or not or need a second tryout.
  • Team coaches call the parents/players to notify them of their standings regarding the tryout.
    • NOTE:  Exception to the automatic top 8 positions is the coaches' right of refusal rule.  We will not force a coach to deal with a bad situation created by a less than positive attitude from a player and/or parent(s).

What is the financial commitment?

There is a team player fee that is determined in early August for the new season.
NEW:  The fee is due by August 30, 2012 and ranges and are determined by how much the organization nets from the summers tournaments.
The largest financial fundraisier the New Berlin Heat Organization in involved in are the
NB Heat Summer Fastpitch Tournament and NB Heat Summer Sizzle Baseball Tournament.
These tournaments are run by the player's parents through concession selling and field marshalling.
Every player's parent must participate.  These is were the Heat Organization makes its money to keep the player cost down and pay for players to attend tournaments and pay umpire fees for regular league games.
The uniform expense is a separate cost.  Around $120 to $150, not including shoes, gloves, bats, bags, cups, under-dri-fit shirts, sliding pants or athletic support cups.
